J. A. Gevaerd (MUFON National Director, Brazil) gave an outstanding presentation with chronological details. SOMETHING BIG happened there and needs to be investigated to the fullest extent. On January 20, 1996, two (maybe more) strange beings were captured near the small town of Varginha. Mr. Gevaerd has testimonies from the military, fire department, and hospitals in the area, as well as many other witnesses from the town. One of the military witnesses who participated in the actual capture of one of the beings will go on network TV in Brazil in October after he is discharged from the military.
The first being was spotted at around 8:30 a.m. and captured about two hours later. Few details about that one were given. The second being was spotted around 3:30 p.m. by two female teenagers and one 22-year-old woman. The creature was bent over in a crouched position near a cinder block-like wall and seemed to be in pain. It had large bright red eyes with no pupils, brown oily skin, protruding veins in the neck (as if blood were pumping through them), and three small horn-like bumps on the head (similar to a young calf's before they emerge from the skin). The creature made a constant buzzing, bee-like sound. The women ran away thinking they had seen the devil, but later realized later it wasn't. They reported it to their families, who called the fire department to come and get it because they are the ones who usually remove wild animals.
Children in the area threw stones at the creature and it creeped away a short distance from where it was originally seen. The fire department was delayed and the military arrived first, threw a net over the creature, who didn't give much resistance, and loaded it into a box in a military truck. The fire department arrived and argued with the military over who should have possession of the creature. The military took this creature to a small public hospital (understaffed and poorly funded) where the doctors said they didn't have the equipment to care for it. It was then taken to a similar facility where the scenario was repeated, before finally ending up at a private hospital where it stayed for a short period.
Mr. Gevaerd says most South American countries turn anything of this nature over to the United States for analysis. There are reports that the United States had informed the Brazilian authorities of an expected crash in that area. There are other reports of crash debris being removed on trucks. This case is very detailed (much more than I can type here), and I suggest interested parties get an audio tape of Mr. Gevaerd's speech from MUFON. It is my feeling that this case deserves TOP PRIORITY and should be investigated to the fullest. I propose that all major (and minor!) UFO organizations should form some sort of consortium of top researchers in the field and get going on this case!
Dr. Leir (MUFON consultant on alien implants) gave a compelling talk regarding the removal of implants from two individuals (two from a woman's toe and one from a man's hand). This case has been known in the field and featured on Paranormal Borderline. He showed the actual video of the implants being removed. (The surgery shown on Paranormal Borderline was a re-creation.) He noted that the area around the implants showed no signs of inflammation or scar tissue, which is unheard of when a foreign object is present inside the body. All three objects removed were the same. Each was "cocooned" in a hard black substance that, when dried out and removed, revealed two small metallic pieces which were magnetic. Both pieces butted together and formed a T shape. He had at one time a total of six implants (some from other surgeries). One was accidentally destroyed by immersion in formaldehyde (the others were stored in a serum made from each person's own blood to prevent the usual mysterious disintegration of these objects). The formaldehyde will be analyzed. There is an ongoing analysis of these objects; it takes time. A detailed report will be completed by September and according to Dr. Leir, it will be printed in a major scientific journal.
Philip Mantle (BUFORA) informed us there was a much better copy of the Roswell film "tent footage" which we were unable to see due to the PAL European format. After his talk, he did show the familiar second autopsy, which included, between scenes, the reel numbers which each segment came from. Bob Shell showed five video slides of the first autopsy, most of which showed only the lower-thigh and knee area of the being's body as it lay on a table. The legs were much whiter and did not show any indication of damage. In one blurry slide of the genital area, we were shown what was said to be a small white object with tendrils being removed from the slit area (personally, I couldn't see it, but interesting). The jury's still out on this one.
Chris Styles (MUFON Asst. Provincial Director, Nova Scotia) gave an excellent talk regarding his detailed research of the Shag Harbor case. I hadn't realized how much there is to this case, and it too should be explored further.
Kevin Randle announced he's getting his psychology degree. He talked about pop culture's influence on the public with regard to alien phenomena. He feels that some abduction reports can be attributed to Hollywood.
